At all levels of competition, from community to elite, sports have switched over to LED lighting in recent years. We discussed the distinctions between LED and metal halide lighting in a prior Support Hub post, and we are now elaborating on this subject by responding to a question we are commonly asked: "How long do LED flood lights last?".
WHAT IS THE LIFESPAN OF LED FLOOD LIGHTS?
A reliable manufacturer's LED floodlights should last for around 50,000 hours.
Nevertheless, a maximum number of burning hours per year may be included as one of the warranty terms, which may limit the longevity.
What does this actually mean, though?
Our experience installing LED lighting systems for more than ten years has shown that a full-size 3G pitch for community usage would have its floodlights on for around 600 hours a year.
A high-quality LED floodlighting system may have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years with the proper care and usage guidelines. The length of this could potentially be increased by switching drivers.
WHAT ELEMENTS CAN REDUCE THE DURATION OF LED LIGHTS?
An LED's lifespan will be shortened if it is constantly operated at full power, which increases heat production. However, this is readily avoidable by employing a dimming device.
As floodlights may be used at various intensities depending on the kind of activity, using a dimming control system helps to increase their lifespan. This is especially helpful for multi-sport playing fields and for fields that are utilized for both training and competition.
With a dimming system, floodlights may be turned on at a level suited for the sport or activity taking place at the moment. Various sports require different light levels.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE SURE YOUR LED LIGHTS LAST AS LONG AS THEY SHOULD?
The crucial word here is maintenance.
During the course of the lighting system's lifecycle, proactive maintenance visits enable the detection and correction of possible faults before they develop into larger ones.
Cleaning LED lights is particularly crucial since grime and other organic material can clog drainage holes. This might eventually result in water leaks, which could seriously harm fitting components.
Your floodlighting system has to be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and the warranty's conditions.
Do LED lights save energy?
LED lights shouldn't see a major decline in energy efficiency during their lifespan. Some manufacturers employ a formula to predict the amount of power that will be lost over time as a result of deterioration brought on by dirt and other external influences.
However, this problem may be readily minimized if maintenance and cleaning are done in accordance with manufacturer and contractor guidelines.
Using a dimming system can also increase the energy efficiency of LED lights since lights are not constantly operating at full power because light levels may be adjusted to fit the activities. During the course of the LED lighting system's lifecycle, this will also result in energy cost reductions.
